LED Light Bulbs Myths: Are they True or Not?

When it comes to LED light bulbs, everyone thinks they know everything. While this type of light bulb has grown in popularity over the last couple of years, there are hundreds of myths surrounding them and today, Mr. Electric of Fort Worth is going to break these myths down.

Let’s separate fact from fiction…

5 LED Light Bulbs Myths

1. They last forever

The first myth we want to debunk is that LED light bulbs will last you forever. Like any kind of light bulb, LED light bulbs do fade and get dimmer over time. Depending on where you use them, how much you use them, and how well-designed your lighting fixture is, a LED light bulb can last on average of 6 years or up to 50,000 hours of light. If you are running them non-stop, it’s proven that they will last you 2x longer than a regular fluorescent or incandescent light bulb would.

2. They contain mercury

This is one we hear a lot – do LED light bulbs contain mercury? We have done our fair share of research here at Mr. Electric of Fort Worth, and we are here to tell you that LED light bulbs DO NOT contain mercury. Not only do they not contain mercury, but they also don’t generate nearly as much heat meaning they don’t produce nearly as much UV radiation.

3. They aren’t able to dim

Nope – also wrong. LED light bulbs are easily dimmable to give you the perfect amount of light all the time. The only thing with dimming LED lights is you will have to purchase one that says ‘dimmable’ that is compatible with a traditional dimmer.

4. They don’t work in high-temperature environments

Properly designed LED light bulbs can function and work in any temperature you put them in. They perform the same in extreme heat as they do in extreme cold. Choose LED light bulbs that are designed to adapt to their environment – regardless of what kind of climate you are in.

5. They are expensive

While the cost of replacing all your light bulbs with LED light bulbs may seem expensive, if you spread the cost out over time, it is significantly less. LED light bulbs have a much longer lifespan, meaning you won’t have to buy them as often as you would a regular fluorescent or incandescent light bulb. Not only that but LED light bulbs use far less energy, so they will save you on monthly costs – making them the more cost-effective option.

It’s Time to Switch to LED

Local electricians at Mr. Electric of Fort Worth can’t even count the number of times they’ve been asked about LED light bulbs and if they are the better option – their answers are always yes, they are the better option.
