Buying an electric car is certainly a great decision. Electric vehicles (EVs) are environmentally friendly and come with lower operating costs when compared to gas-powered vehicles. If you’re considering buying an electric car, you have to modify your garage to ensure an efficient charging process, keep your car secure, and protect it from the elements.

At Mr. Electric, we specialize in EV charging station installation and electric repair service. As professional EVSE installers, we get plenty of questions from electric vehicle owners on how to prepare garages for electric vehicles. In this article, we will provide you with tips on how to prepare your garage door for an electric car.

The guys were super nice, I loved that they did the work immediately. Also after having a discussion with them about the static electricity from a lightenimg strike we had and it fried everything they suggested a surge protector to keep that from happening again. So we did that.

Scheduled an appointment with Mr Electric of Fort Worth and received a call  they were able to show up early and had Dylan show up on time stocked with a full truck. He was able to diagnosis the issue quickly and restore my power to a few plugs that were causing the breakers to trip continuously. Dylan was very knowledgable, clearly explained the cause and how he would fix the issue, and addressed all concerns that we had. He was replaced two breakers and installed 2 new outlets along with diagnosing the problem in about an hour. Very quick and so far seems to have resolved our electrical issue. Would definitely recommend Mr Electric of Fort Worth!

Dylan was so nice and always on time. Very qualified and explained everything he needed to do in a way I understood. My older house required an outside panel so I had a lot of work but Dylan and his helper worked together very well and finished on time so I was not out of power more than needed. Everything looked and worked great when done. I don't know how he was able to replace the cracked power pole and wiring on my roof so quickly and beautifully. I am very, very impressed with his skill level and would request him for any future work. The company is very well organized and office contact was a pleasure to work with(which is rare since these positions are usually underpaid)so reward her well, she is the "door" to your organization. She and Dylan sealed my deal!

How to Prepare Your Garage for an Electric Car
  1. Organize And Declutter The Garage Space

Start by clearing out unnecessary items and creating a well-organized space. This not only ensures a safer environment but also provides easy access to your charging equipment.

  1. Install A Level 2 Charging Station

While it’s possible to charge your electric car from a regular outlet, it comes with several downsides, such as a long charging time and the risk of fire damage. It’s advisable to hire an affordable electrician to install a level 2 charging station in your garage to ensure a reliable and efficient charging process. A level 2 charging station eliminates the risk of fire damage and offers faster charging. Call a reputable EVSE installer to help you install a level 2 charger in your garage.

  1. Consider A Dedicated Circuit For EV Charging

To ensure a reliable and efficient charging process, have an electrician set up a dedicated circuit for your electric car charger. Electric vehicles draw a significant amount of power when charging, especially when using level 2 chargers. A dedicated circuit ensures that the charging equipment is the only device drawing power from that circuit. This prevents overloading your existing electrical system.

  1. Keep The Garage Warm And Dry

Electric car batteries perform optimally in moderate temperatures. Before your electric car arrives, insulate your garage and consider a heating solution if you live in a cold climate. Some of the heating options to choose from include electric heaters, gas heaters, and radiant heating systems. Seal any gaps or cracks in the walls, windows, doors, and the garage floor. Weatherstripping around doors and windows helps prevent drafts and moisture infiltration. If your garage is prone to high humidity levels, use a dehumidifier to remove excess moisture from the air. Keeping the garage dry also prevents moisture-related issues.

  1. Keep The Garage Secure

This may sound obvious, but it’s worth mentioning. Your electric car is a significant investment, so it makes sense to put measures in place to protect it from getting stolen. This may include locking the garage, installing security cameras, an alarm system, and high-security locks.
