Smart technology has evolved over the years from a luxury to a mainstream feature in modern living. App-based security systems, smart thermostats, voice-controlled lighting, and connected appliances have become commonplace, and home smart systems are only growing more advanced. As a homeowner, embracing these technologies means greater energy efficiency, convenience, and security. However, most people do not realize the increasing demand these systems place on electrical infrastructure. At Mr. Electric, we can inspect your existing system and determine if it was designed to accommodate smart systems. This is crucial to maintain optimal efficiency and avoid safety hazards. Let’s explore how a smart home system installation can affect your electrical load.

How Smart Devices Increase Your Electrical Load

Smart devices are designed with efficiency in mind, but continuously consuming power for standby functions and adding new devices that require energy can increase your electrical load. Here’s how integrating smart devices into your home’s system can increase your electrical load.

The guys were super nice, I loved that they did the work immediately. Also after having a discussion with them about the static electricity from a lightenimg strike we had and it fried everything they suggested a surge protector to keep that from happening again. So we did that.

Scheduled an appointment with Mr Electric of Fort Worth and received a call  they were able to show up early and had Dylan show up on time stocked with a full truck. He was able to diagnosis the issue quickly and restore my power to a few plugs that were causing the breakers to trip continuously. Dylan was very knowledgable, clearly explained the cause and how he would fix the issue, and addressed all concerns that we had. He was replaced two breakers and installed 2 new outlets along with diagnosing the problem in about an hour. Very quick and so far seems to have resolved our electrical issue. Would definitely recommend Mr Electric of Fort Worth!

Dylan was so nice and always on time. Very qualified and explained everything he needed to do in a way I understood. My older house required an outside panel so I had a lot of work but Dylan and his helper worked together very well and finished on time so I was not out of power more than needed. Everything looked and worked great when done. I don't know how he was able to replace the cracked power pole and wiring on my roof so quickly and beautifully. I am very, very impressed with his skill level and would request him for any future work. The company is very well organized and office contact was a pleasure to work with(which is rare since these positions are usually underpaid)so reward her well, she is the "door" to your organization. She and Dylan sealed my deal!

Cody was professional, knowledgeable, and was able to provide me with a quick diagnosis pertaining to a wiring issue in one of my rooms. He gave me the price for the repair/modification and fixed the issue all in less than an hour. Thanks Cody!

How Smart Home Devices Affect Your Electrical Load

Constant Standby Power

Smart devices are interconnected and often use one control panel to ease control over various systems. Unfortunately, most smart devices remain turned on and connected to your home’s Wi-Fi. This includes security cameras, smart speakers, and smart hubs that use a fraction of your home’s power round-the-clock and add up over time.

Increased Device Demand

When you invest in a professional smart home system installation, every new device adds to your home’s overall electrical demand. Whether it is a refrigerator or a smart TV, the cumulative effect can be significant. This is particularly true for older homes, which have outdated components that cannot handle the increased electrical demand.

Older Electrical Systems

As mentioned, homes with older or outdated electrical systems may not handle the increased demand from numerous smart devices. While the impact may not raise concerns initially, prolonged use can lead to overloaded circuits, frequent breaker trips, and even fire hazards if left unchecked. If your home is over 30 years old, it may be wise to consult an trained electrician before upgrading your home.

New Types of Devices

Some smart technologies consume a lot of energy. A great example is a smart TV, which uses three to thirty times more power than traditional TV systems. This is mainly due to their advanced features, hence the need to consult a trusted electrician in Fort Worth, TX before upgrading your living spaces. A licensed electrical service provider can recommend low-voltage wiring and network infrastructure, creating a robust framework that supports seamless connectivity between smart devices.

How Smart Devices Decrease Your Electrical Load

Now that you know how upgrading your home can increase your electrical load, you can make informed decisions that keep your home functional and efficient. Let’s explore the ways smart devices decrease your electrical load.

Eliminate Phantom Load

Smart power strips and plugs cut power to devices that consume energy even when turned off but still plugged in. This includes chargers, entertainment centers, and other electronics that draw power in standby mode. A well-installed smart home system can significantly optimize your energy use and protect connected devices.

Optimize Energy Use

Smart devices allow you to remotely turn devices on or off via a smartphone or tablet. Enhanced control over connected devices ensures nothing is left running unnecessarily when you are away from home. Additionally, smart devices like lights and thermostats can be programmed to activate or deactivate at specific times, reducing waste and ensuring they only operate when needed.

Increase Efficiency

Finally, using smart bulbs that can be automatically turned on and off or dimmed can significantly reduce lighting-related energy use. If you are looking to upgrade various household appliances, choose modern systems that have built-in energy-saving modes that can be activated for further efficiency.
